Beyond YouTube Kids: what parent-curated viewing actually changes
YouTube Kids made an important move by filtering content. But it left in place the two mechanisms that extend watching. Here is what happens when you remove them.
YouTube Kids was created to give parents a safer space, and it does that: it filters unsuitable content and offers age controls. But under the surface, it runs on the same foundation as regular YouTube, the same recommendation algorithm and the same autoplay. So even inside the "kids" environment, the system is still designed to extend watch time.
That is the essential difference. Filtering answers the question "what does the child see." It does not answer the question "who decides what they see next." And as long as the algorithm and autoplay are in place, the answer to the second question is: the system, not the parent.

In curated viewing, the parent builds the list of videos a child can watch in advance. There is no open search, no refreshing feed, no "recommended for you." The child sees exactly what the parent chose, and nothing else. When a video ends, no new video pops up.

Who it suits
Curated viewing asks for active involvement from the parent, choosing videos rather than just switching on a filter. It is not a "passive babysitter" solution. But that is exactly why it suits parents who want real control over what their child meets, not just a promise that they won't meet something bad.
The two approaches are not in conflict. You can use filtering for basic protection, and curation when you want time on screen to be deliberate and bounded. The difference is who holds the wheel: as long as the algorithm is driving, it will keep extending the trip.
